When Did You First Visit Crete?
I visited Crete in October 2022 and spent one full month immersing myself in the island’s incredible diversity. Traveling during the shoulder season meant fewer crowds, milder weather, and a more relaxed pace.During my stay, I explored several iconic and off-the-beaten-path destinations for a well-rounded experience.

I started in the beautiful region of Chania. With its picturesque Venetian harbor, winding cobblestone streets, and colorful local markets, Chania is an ideal spot to soak in the island’s rich history and lively atmosphere. From there, I made my way to Balos Lagoon, where I found surreal turquoise waters and white sand beaches. This was one of the most stunning natural sights from my tour of Crete.
I ventured south to Matala, a seaside village famous for its caves and laid-back vibe, before heading to the remote mountain village of Krista in the southeast. Here, I experienced authentic Cretan hospitality, traditional cuisine, and stunning mountainous landscapes that few tourists get to see.
This combination of coastal beauty, historic towns, and rustic mountain life gave me a deep appreciation for Crete’s multifaceted character.

What Makes Crete Special?
I have traveled Greece extensively, and Crete is one of the country’s most captivating destinations.

History, nature, and tradition are deeply intertwined. Its rich cultural heritage, which dates back thousands of years to the ancient Minoan civilization, is considered Europe’s earliest advanced society. That deep-rooted history is still very much alive today in the archaeological ruins, in the stories passed down through generations, and in the rhythms of daily life.
Equally special is the Cretan way of life, which is shaped by strong local traditions and an unwavering connection to the land. Life here moves with the rhythms of nature, and that authenticity is most vividly experienced through the island’s renowned culinary culture. Dishes are based on simple yet extraordinary fresh ingredients, like just-pressed olive oil, sun-ripened tomatoes, wild herbs, and cheeses made by hand in the mountains.

Crete’s dramatic landscapes also set it apart from other destinations I have visited. Natural wonders, like the famous Samaria Gorge and lesser-known gems in the southeast, invite adventure, whether you’re hiking through rugged cliffs and wildflowers or simply pausing to take in the silence of untouched terrain.
What insider tip would you give to someone for their first trip to Crete?
Always trust the locals when it comes to food.
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to let the Cretans guide your dining experience. Whether you’re at a seaside taverna or a tiny family-run spot in the mountains, ask your server what’s fresh, what’s in season, or what their favorite item is.

Cretans take immense pride in their culinary traditions, and they love sharing them. More often than not, you’ll end up with something you wouldn’t have thought to order, and it could be one of the most memorable meals of your trip.
What are your favorite regions/parts of Crete and why?
Crete is filled with incredible destinations, but I found myself especially drawn to the southeast coast where I was able to enjoy the comfort and amenities of luxury full-service hotels and access pristine beaches with crystal clear waters.
Nearby, you’ll find charming sleepy towns nestled in the mountains with incredible access to some of Crete’s best gorge hikes. These hidden canyons are surrounded by towering cliffs and stunning native flora, offering a real sense of Crete’s wild, unspoiled side.

What food should everyone try while in Crete?
Dakos is an absolute must and is available at most local restaurants. It’s a barley rusk topped with grated fresh tomato, crumbled local cheese (usually mizithra or feta), oregano, and a generous drizzle of high-quality Cretan olive oil.
For something a bit sweeter, I recommend visiting a local bakery for Kalitsounia. This is a small cheese or herb-filled pastry, lightly sweetened and sometimes drizzled with local thyme honey. Pair it with a traditional Greek coffee for the perfect mid-morning treat.

Of course, no trip to Crete would be complete without indulging in the island’s exceptional seafood. Like many parts of Greece, Crete boasts some of the freshest fish and seafood in the world, often caught that very morning and grilled simply with olive oil, lemon, and herbs. Whether it’s octopus, red mullet, or a whole grilled seabream, the flavors are pure and unforgettable.
And don’t leave without picking up some local honey and olive oil to take home.

What is your favorite restaurant in Crete?
One of my absolute favorite restaurants in Crete was at Taverna Bogazi, in the charming fishing village of Mochlos. The restaurant sits right on the water, with tables practically spilling onto the edge of the sea. The highlight was the fresh fish which is caught daily, simply prepared and cooked to perfection.
What Are The Three Best Outdoor Activities In Crete?
Crete is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Throughout my time here, I got to swim in sparkling waters, embark on sun-soaked adventures through rugged terrain, and experience the island’s wild beauty in the most unforgettable ways.

My three favorite outdoor activities in Crete were:
- Quad Biking To Balos Beach: Balos Beach is famous for its turquoise lagoon, bright white sands and calm waters, but getting there was just as magical. I took a 4×4 through the island’s dramatic landscape, weaving along dusty tracks and taking in sweeping views of pristine coastline. As I visited during the shoulder months of October, I was rewarded with a postcard-perfect beach all to myself.
- Hiking Sarakina Gorge: This was one of the most rewarding gorge hikes I experienced in Crete. In just a short distance, I passed towering walls, natural rock pools, and narrow passages shaped by centuries of flowing water. After a couple of hours, I emerged near the coast which was just a short distance from Myrtos Beach where I could cool off with a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea.
- Boating To Spinalonga Island: Spinalonga Island is uninhabited islet that has been designated a National Heritage Monument. From the boat, and later on foot, I got to admire impressive relics from the Roman times, Venetian occupation, and Ottoman Empire. Along the way, I also had the chance to swim in secluded coves!

What Are The Best Cultural Experiences In Crete?
One of my favorite things about traveling is immersing myself in different cultures. I enjoy getting to know the local traditions, learning from the people who live there, and experiencing everyday life through their eyes.

In Crete, my guide welcomed me into his private countryside home where he showed off his family’s unique antique collection and spectacular organic garden. He even fired up a spontaneous lamb leg barbecue and demonstrated how to make a true Cretan-style “Greek” salad. It was a truly memorable experience for me.
One of the best cultural activities in Crete has to be exploring Kritsa Village, one of the oldest on the island. I visited a local bakery, where I was invited behind the scenes to see the traditional techniques and ovens in action. Afterward, I sampled an incredible spread of homemade pastries and sweets, paired with strong Cretan coffee.

In the same village, I met a local artisan who uses a traditional loom to weave stunning handmade bags, tapestries, and blankets. She even gifted me a summer bag I still use today!
Where Is The Best Place To Stay In Crete?
There are a lot of incredible accommodations in Crete, but two luxury properties stand out as top-tier choices for travelers seeking both style and substance: Phaea Blue Palace and Elounda Beach Hotel.

Phaea Blue Palace is a refined seaside property that remains authentic to Crete’s charm while offering five-star amenities. The spacious suites and bungalows cascade down a hillside toward the turquoise bay, with private pools and sweeping views of Spinalonga Island.
Elounda Beach Hotel is nestled on the island’s northeastern coast and is known for its discreet luxury. The property offers everything from overwater bungalows to private villas with direct sea access and boasts award-winning dining, a serene spa, and access to both water sports and cultural excursions.
